The picture of Dorian Gray (1)

"The picture of Dorian Gray" is a story written by Oscar Wilde in 1890.

This story is about a young man called Dorian Gray who was painted by Basil Hallward. Dorian wishes that he could always stay young and the picture could grow old, and that was what happened. Dorian kept his beauty and his youth and the picture, little by little, became ugly and old. But Dorian wasn't a good person and he was full of evil and he did evil things like killing people, that's why the picture changed every day.

My favourite character was Basil because he wanted the best for his friend but he couldn't help him. It's a pity that he was killed by a "false" man without soul like Dorian.

When he uncovered the portrait he saw a very strange thing, his face had dissapeared because his behaviour was not human. He coudn't understand this, he cried, he repented but nothing changed in the portrait and he decided to kill himself. When he died the picture in the portrait dissapeared completely.

The Picture of Dorian Gray

This interesting story was written by Oscar Wilde in 1890. He wrote many stories but this is his only novel. ‘The picture of Dorian Gray’ is the most famous book written by Oscar Wilde, together with ‘The importance of being Earnestt; ‘An ideal husband’; ‘Lady Winderemere’s fan’.
This story is about a young man who was painted in a portrait by a good friend. At the same time, he met a person who would change his life. Since the moment he saw his portrait he fell in love with his beauty and youth.
Dorian was an innocent and influenciable person. He was a good man, but he didn’t make good decisions. On the other hand, the antagonist, Lord Henry was an intelligent man, but he didn’t use his intelligence to do good actions, he was a bad influence to Dorian.
Basil, the artist, was a good person, but his feelings towards Dorian hurt him.
In my opinion it’s a fantastic story because a picture can say more about a person than the same person.

When he discovered that the picture worsened, Dorian's portrait caught fire and finally finished his sentence. Dorian Gray took the ashes and threw them away forever. He went to live far away and died thinking about all the bad things he did.

He looked round and saw the knife that had killed Basil. "Now it will kill the artist's work", he said to himself. "It will kill the past, and when that is dead, I will be free"...

When Dorian Gray was going to dig the knife into the picture, the police entered the room and arrested him.

-Dorian: Why do you arrest me?
-Police: Because you are a killer, you killed Basil! You are going to prison for years.
-Dorian: no! - I'm innocent.

After some years, Dorian killed himself in prison, and the paint was burned so that no one remembered it.
Although everything happened too fast and it was too painful Lord Henry moved on with his life.

He went quietly uptairs to the locked room. Yes, he would live a good life, and he did not need to be afraid any more of the evil face of his soul. But when he uncovered the picture, he gave a cry of pain. There was no change. The face in the picture was still terrible - more hateful, if possible, than before - and the red on the hand seemed brighther, like new blood.

He was tired so he went to sleep. Next day, it was his bithday. The servants made a cake.

- Happy birthday, Sir! - said one of the servants.
- Oh thank you! - Dorian answered.

When he blew the candles he made three wishes: the first wish was to bring Sybil Vane and Basil to life again.
The second wish was he could change their life.
The last wish was he would be happy.

The next day life gave him a new opportunity.

When he uncovered the picture , he thought that it was finished. He should admit his crimes to the police so the picture could be as before.
Then he took his jacket and his hat, he went to the police station and he could admit his mistake.
Suddenly his body began to disappear and Dorian was old and went to bed, but he was fine because everything that happened was a dream.

Basil visited Dorian because he travelled to Paris at midnight. In Dorian' s house, Basil asked him to show him the picture.
-Dorian- said Basil -show me the portrait please.-
-I don't know Basil...the picture is different.-
-How? Why?-
-Can you see Basil...-
They went upstairs to the little room, and uncovered the picture.
-Dorian! The picture hasn't changed!-
The portrait was beautiful as the first time.
-It...is impossible!- cried Dorian.
-Dorian, I don' t like your jokes!- said Basil happily. -You make me laugh!-
Dorian didn't understand the reason why the picture was fine.
Basil had dinner at Dorian's house, and they talked about a lots of things, good things of the life. When Basil left the house, he said:
-Dorian...you are very important for me, for my life. You changed me. Bye Dorian...-
-Bye Basil...you are very important too.-
Dorian closed the door, and ran upstairs. He uncovered the picture. It was horrible! And he knew the reason: when he was with Basil, everything about him was beautiful.

When he uncovered the picture, he gave a cry of pain. The face in the picture was terrible and hateful. He stared at the picture with hate and fear.
Then, Henry arrived and saw the picture too.

_ The picture has changed!- he said.
_ It's your fault!-cried Dorian angrily.

Dorian killed him and escaped in a big cruise to the United States. After that, the people of London never saw him again.

Dorian felt that his heart was becoming increasingly worse and that the only solution was to break the picture that much damage had done. It was there when he grabbed the knife that was on top of the table, the same knife that had killed Basil. He was about to hit the first stab at the picture when the door opened suddenly. Lady Monmouth was there desperately trying to save the person who secretly had loved. So strong was her love that it took only two minutes to change his opinion. From that day onwards his life was different and was dedicated to changing all the evil he had done.

When Dorian was going to dig the knife in the portrait, he
thought of painting another portrait. The portrait came alive and
took the knife and said:

- You won't be able to paint me because I will kill you.
- I will not die- said Dorian(and dug the knife in the portrait)

Then the police came and arrested Dorian.

- You're under arrest for killing Basil and destroying a
famous portrait- said the police officer.
